Bobby Valentine on Good Living – May 30th!!
On Tuesday at 9:30am, take a break and tune into AM1490WGCH for “Good Living with Michele Thomas.” Michele will be having coffee with baseball legend Bobby Valentine! Bobby spent 10 seasons in the majors leagues playing for the Dodgers, Padres and Mets just to name a few. Once done playing on the field, he moved his position to off the field and started coaching third base for the Mets. He made his major league managerial debut in 1985 with the Texas Rangers and went onto become the Ranger’s manager with the most wins in history.
Valentine also has experience in the broadcast booth. He has done stints on SNY, covering the New York Mets and on MLB Network as an expert on the state of baseball today. Valentine was also part of ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball announcing team with Orel Hershiser and Dan Shulman.
Baseball is not Bobby’s only success!! Since 1980, he has owned and operated Bobby Valentine’s Sports Gallery Café, a sports bar that is located in his hometown of Stamford. In January 2014, he opened a franchise in Windsor Locks in partnership with Sportech Venues, Inc. along with a second location in Arlington, Texas. Bobby also started a production company, Makuhari Media, with producing partner Andrew J. Muscato. This company produces sports themed documentaries such as Branca’s Pitch. He is on the Advisory Board of Steel Sports and is the owner of Bobby Valentine’s Sports Academy.
Most important Bobby is known for his philanthropic ventures. Valentine helped to find the Mickey Lione Jr. Scholarship Fund, which awards scholarships to Stamford sophomores who excel off the field and exemplify the values that Lione instilled his athletes and students.
The list goes on and on! However, one of Bobby’s greatest philanthropic efforts was his response to 9/11. He worked relentlessly commanding an emergency staging area at Shea Stadium. He visited a Queen’s firehouse that lost 19 members during the tragedy and reached out to numerous children who lost parents on that horrific day. He won the 2002 Branch Rickey Award for his donations and personal work with survivors of the September 11 attacks and was awarded the key to the city by the Mayor.
In 2015, Valentine was awarded the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association Lifetime Achievement Award for his on-field accomplishments and off-field contributions to communities across the nation.
Bobby assumed the role of Executive Director of Athletics at Sacred Heart University in June 2013. He has helped raise the visibility of Pioneer athletics over his tenure, with appearances on ESPN, SNY and other regional media outlets. Be sure to tune in on Tuesday, May 30th at 9:30 for the amazing Bobby Valentine!
