WellSpring Wednesday – The Mediterranean Diet: Is It the Food or the Lifestyle?

For years and years the diet always recommended for maintaining health and longevity was that of the Mediterranean people.  What’s not good about that?  This type of diet recommends nuts, fresh produce, and olive oil.  Yummy!  If eating this type of diet will lower my risk of heart disease – I’m in!

But wait . . it might not be that simple.  A team of filmmakers led by a British cardiologist say that the good health in the Mediterranean region might not be driven by food alone.  There could also be a cornucopia of other factors involved which may have contributed to the longevity of those living in the region.

In the new film, “Pioppi Protocol,” Dr. Aseem Malhotra and documentary filmmaker, Donal O’Neill, noticed that diet was only one part of the equation.  There are many factors that seemed relevant to the people in Pioppi, Italy.  Since the average age in the town is 90, there has to be much more going on.  “We need to redefine the Mediterranean diet,” said Dr. Malhotra.
